This was not ideal for rally riders wanting to maintain a high average speed. One of the highlights of Leg  was a cable car bonus in San Marino. Bonus #: pts San Marino Cable Car, San Marino. Two photos (and receipt) are required: one photo of the cable car before you get on it and another one of you from inside the cable car half way up. The cable car operates from . - . hrs. Most of the riders who visited this location fell into our carefully laid trap. The next bonus was Palazzo Publico, which was literally a few steps from the top of the cable car ride. However, most failed to notice this until after they took the cable car back down the hill, returned to their bikes and called up the next bonus — only to discover they had to take the cable car back to the top where they had just been. Another popular bonus was the Hotel Flanona in Plomin on the Croatian coast (a discovery made by Gerhard on his verification travels). The hotel offered stunning sea views and a wonderful coastal road.Riders had to get a receipt and take a photograph while eating a meal. The Coliseum in Rome was another popular stop for some riders; we made this a nighttime only bonus so they could avoid the notorious Rome traffic. The final bonus for riders at the end of Leg  was “Meet the Rallymaster” at the top of the Gavial Pass, about  miles from the checkpoint. This was a time-restricted bonus that was available only from  pm to  pm. The interesting part of this bonus was that it required riding a very tight and technical switchback-laden road to , meters (, feet). Add in a thunderstorm as some riders were making the descent and this was a hard-earned  points. At the end of Leg , three riders DNF’d due to mechanical or personal problems. Belgian riders Robert Koeber and Mich- iel Kerkhof, and English rider John Young held the top three positions. It is obvious that having multi-day rally experience was an advantage, as these three riders were all Iron Butt Rally veterans. Other IBR veterans in the top ten were Phil Weston and Kevin and Lyn Weller. LEG 2 (72 HOURS) Passo del Tonale to Stuttgart Europe has a rich and often bloody history, so places of historical interest and importance were featured in the rally book — The temple of Poseidon and the Acropolis in Greece; Gold, Juno, Sword, Omaha, and Utah Beaches in France; Roman aqueducts in Spain and Portugal; the Bran- denburg Gate in Germany and the House of Blackheads (built in ) in Latvia to name but a few. The Leg  bonus book also offered a number of viable route options for the riders. There were twelve combination bonuses available. These provided extra points in addition to
