Some riders lost points at the scoring table for forgetting to put their flag in the bonus photo or for not appearing in the photo themselves when instructed. It was a credit to the sportsmanship of every rider that they were all courteous and polite despite losing valuable points. Riders had also been told that they would only get points for bonuses claimed. So it was unfortunate when Michiel Kerkhof made the mistake of for- getting to claim the Eichendorff Statue in Poland worth , points — the photo was on the memory card of his camera, but not on his scoresheet. Unfortunately, three other riders received DNFs. IBA President Michael Kneebone travelled to Stuttgart to participate in the ceremony and mark the end of this momen- tous event. Demonstrating the quality of the event, all riders would receive a ride certificate printed on slate and the top five riders would also receive glass trophies. Riders were called up in ascending order to receive their cer- tificates. When we reached the top five positions, those riders who had not been called yet were asked to come to the front of the room. They were Benny Watz, Michiel Kerkhof, Kevin and Lyn Weller, John Young and Viki Pakarinen. And in the end, the three Iron Butt Rally veterans held the top spots: Mich- iel Kerkhof , Kevin and Lyn Weller, and John Young. Mich- iel Kerkhof, who rode a Harley Davdison Ultra Classic CVO, won in spite of losing those , points and received a well- deserved standing ovation from his fellow competitors. The  European Tour was finished. I departed early the next morning for home. It would be two days before I reached the ferry port in Scotland. My journey with Gerhard, from rally conception to completion, was exceptionally rewarding. I could now stop paddling. We all could. EUROPEAN TOUR 2014 RALLY Speaking before the award ceremony, Michael Kneebone made a special trip from the U.S. Winner of the inaugural European Tour rally was Michiel Kerk- hof, who is photographed next to rallymasters Chris McGaffin (left) and Gerhard Memmen-Krueger (right).
