I had to stop for about  minutes while undertaking an equinox ride on September ,  since the road was taking me directly into the sun. While it is unlikely that every ride will be influenced by the position of the sun, it is important to understand what’s going on and plan accordingly. Figure  illustrates the position of the sun in the above example. How does this all translate into prac- tical terms? The three graphics in Figure  theo- retically illustrate a ~-hour day from sunrise to sunset. Because of the sun’s elevation, and depending on whether the rider is traveling into the sun, riding time is reduced to about five hours, which could be stretched to seven hours with modifications to a visor. Thus a rider could potentially lose three hours of riding. Few things are more terrifying then realizing you’re on a motorcycle and can’t see where you’re going…except realizing you’re on a motorcycle and no one can see you! Think about it: If the sun is blinding you, then it’s prudent to conclude that other drivers are equally disadvantaged too. Here are some tips worth considering: • Slow down if the sun temporarily compromises your vision. • Maintain an even greater space cushion with other occupants of the road and anticipate what they’ll do. • Take advantage of websites that calculate the elevation and azimuth of the sun to see how it will impact your ride.Three informative and reliable sites are www.gaisma.com, www.pveducation.org, and www. suncalc.net. Finally, since the sun rises and sets rather quickly, even if you’re in the middle of an IBA ride, consider stopping for  minutes until light conditions improve.
