I re-tensioned the chain just four times in , miles and still had plenty of adjustment remaining. I also decided to try an Airhawk seat. I have to say this was about the best $ investment I have ever made! With the engine rebuilt and all of the modifications in place, I took sev- eral warm-up rides, each lasting a few hundred miles, to shake out any pos- sible mechanical issues. On the very first test ride I returned with a water pump vent dripping radiator fluid. I replaced the pump and initially all went well, but within a couple of days, the engine started overheating. I inspected the cool- ing system and found a piece of metal lodged between the housing and the impeller, which resulted in a sheared shaft pin. I replaced the broken pin, flushed the cooling system and it worked perfectly for the entire ride. I then started working on the logistics of my ride.I prepositioned two-stroke oil in Wisconsin and Fairbanks and also had my father bring eight quarts of oil to Key West since he was coming down to see me off. In addition to the oil, I also sent ULTIMATE COAST-TO-COAST CHALLENGE… two .-gallon gas cans and a -gallon tour tube to Fairbanks so I had enough fuel to get me up the Dalton.
