BestRest Products of Mountlake Terrace, Wash- ington, the manufacturer of the “CyclePump,”has recently made a major upgrade to the air chucks used on their pump and on the accessory air pressure gauge that can be used in-line with the pump. The old style air chucks were the only issue I had with an otherwise excel- lent air pump. Depending on the partic- ular valve stem they are being attached to, it can be difficult to obtain a leak-free seal with the old air chucks. The new air chucks fix that problem, making it easy to quickly obtain an airtight seal. Features The nearby photograph shows the latest version of the CyclePump and the accessory “EZAir Gauge” sitting on the " x " canvas bag that comes with the pump. The pump, the air pressure gauge, and the bag combined weigh . pounds. The pump alone weighs . pounds and the aluminum housing for the pump measures just ." x ." x .". As shown in the photograph, the pump has a standard “SAE” connec- tor for connecting to a -volt source. However, adapters are supplied to con- nect to a standard cigarette lighter recep- tacle or a BMW -volt outlet. There is also an adapter supplied with alligator clamps to connect directly to battery terminals. In comparing the new pump to one of my older models, I noted a couple of other changes. Screws which were used to connect the folding feet to the body of the pump have been replaced with rivets. Since I’ve had screws come loose after extended use, this is a useful change. The case itself is also now assembled using rivets rather than screws. The other obvi- ous change is that the Velcro strap used for storing the hose and power cord is now riveted to the case rather than attached to the power cord. This makes for neater storage. Is it Worth the Price? At $ for the pump and $ for the accessory air pressure gauge ($ if both are purchased at the same time), the CyclePump is the most expensive small -volt pump on the market. Simi- lar size pumps sold under the AirMan and Slime brands are about $. Harbor Freight is currently selling a Pittsburgh Automotive brand -volt pump with an integrated gauge for $.. Despite the large price difference, the CyclePump is the best choice. I had personally used AirMan and Slime brand pumps before reading an article in the November  issue of Motorcycle Consumer News (MCN) com- paring these pumps and an even less expensive Campbell Hausfeld pump to the CyclePump. The CyclePump inflated a /R tire to  psi in five minutes. The AirMan and Slime pumps only took the tire to  psi in the same amount of time. After purchasing the CyclePump, I ran my own tests on an even larger tire and confirmed the performance differ- ence reported by MCN. Saving a few minutes inflating a tire may not seem like a big deal until you have a flat tire on a busy highway with a relatively narrow shoulder. Less than two weeks before writing this article, my CyclePump was able to minimize the time a friend of mine had to spend on the shoulder of U.S.  fixing a flat tire on his Honda Gold Wing. His $ pump was taking forever to fill the tire, so I loaned him my CyclePump. When -wheelers are blowing by you at  mph, you quickly realize that $ is a small price to pay to reduce the time you are in a dangerous situation while fixing a flat. Another valuable feature of the CyclePump is that the aluminum case New and Improved CyclePump By Tom Austin Retrofitted air chuck with tightened clamp. ProductEvaluation
