Some of the most popular combinations were the Grand Canyon bonus for , points (visiting four bonuses within the Grand Canyon du Verdon in France), the island ferry bonus for , points (visiting two bonuses located on Islands), and the Frank Zappa bonus for , points (visiting two Frank Zappa statues). At  am on Tuesday morning, the first three riders to depart were the top three riders from Leg , each going in a different direction. The bonuses in Leg  were spread far and wide across Europe — from Greece to Norway and Ireland to the Rus- sian Border. Although there were  bonuses in this leg, riders would discover distinct high scoring routes developed for their consideration. One such option was to go to Greece. Another good option was to go to Spain and Portugal. Yet another high scoring route was to bag bonuses in Poland, Latvia and Estonia. Robert Koeber went to Spain, Michiel Kerkhof left for Estonia, John Young was riding a route based around Spain and France, and Kevin and Lyn Weller went to Greece. This is what the rallymasters hoped would happen — the top riders all taking different routes. It was during Leg  that possibly one of the most bizarre episodes took place. While taking a rest break, Johannes Faget returned home to cut his lawn and, wanting to share this fact with rally staff, had taken a photo of his lawn complete with rally flag in a before and after shot. This provided much amusement back at Rally HQ even if it did not provide Johannes with extra points. Meanwhile, Michiel Kerkhof was having an interesting time trying not get shot by a border guard at the Belarus-Poland border. He was on his way to Vilnius,Lithuania, but had been having problems with his Garmin and Sena Bluetooth module.Unbeknownst to Michiel, the Garmin had rerouted him through Belarus, which requires a visa. By all accounts the guard had shouted at Michiel to stop and had run towards him with his weapon drawn. Our biggest fear is that a competitor would be involved in a serious motor- cycle accident. Having one shot at an international border would not be good either.Thankfully, neither occurred. As the rally ended early on Friday morning, we expected almost everyone to attend a group photo bonus for , points at Solitude Castle, which was only  minutes from the rally finish. This bonus required the riders to be in attendance at : am for a photograph. As some riders would find out, : does not mean : and  seconds. At exactly : and zero seconds the photograph was taken. Across the lawn in the early morning gloom, we saw several riders running as fast as they could, rally flags in hand to reach the bonus. When they realized they had missed it, you could see the looks of despair on their faces as they turned in the pouring rain to walk back to their motorcycles. The loss of , points would be painful for some. » The Rhine Falls in Germany was bonus #1073 and worth 1,371 points — photo by Martin Buck. Photographed by Roman Antonin, bonus #1133 was to take a picture of the Branden- burg Gate in Berlin, Germany, worth 5627 points.
